| Target Rifle Australia Inc is the National Association involved in, and responsible for, both social and competitive smallbore target rifle and air rifle target shooting within Australia. | |
| The State Associations of Western Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, Queensland and New South Wales are affiliated with Target Rifle Australia Inc, and TRA is in turn affiliated with the Australian Shooting Association. | |
| At the highest level, the sports of air rifle and smallbore rifle shooting are Olympic Games, World Championships and Commonwealth Games sports. Indeed, many TRA members have competed at this elite level and successfully represented Australia more recently at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester and the Sydney and Athens Olympic Games. The shooters are also well into training for the Commonwealth Games to be held in Melbourne in 2006. | |
| The precise nature of competition is governed by rules set out by Target Rifle Australia Inc and the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF). The ISSF and TRA are responsible for determining the rules of competition, including rules regarding clothing, firearm specifications, competition time limits, target sizes, standards and general safety guidelines on shooting ranges. |
| Smallbore rifle shooting
and air rifle shooting is an "equal opportunity" sport in Australia
- that is men and women often compete together in the same event. Shooters
are graded based upon previous experience and score averages. In international
competition, however, there are separate events for men and women.
Unlike many sports, most shooters may start at a not so young age yet are able to remain competitive well past standard sport retirement ages. Shooting is a life long sport with relatively few barriers to participation, yet the sport offers opportunities and challenges to anyone who has a desire to compete at a social, national or international level. Target shooting is a sport that can be undertaken by virtually anybody irrespective of age or gender. Shooting tends to be a family sport and our membership comprises a higher percentage of family groups than can be found in most other sports. All members of the family can enjoy shooting as a recreational or leisure activity. |
